Building a Business with Integrity, Guided by the Teachings of H.H. Dorje Chang Buddha III

To many, I was seen as a capable entrepreneur—a “strong woman.” In the beginning, my husband and I ran an auto repair shop and later started a fuel technology company. Yet, as the saying goes, “business is like a battlefield,” and despite all efforts, we ended up losing money. Outwardly we appeared successful, but who could understand the pain within?

By karmic affinity, I encountered the Dharma and respectfully listened to the Dharma discourses of H.H. Dorje Chang Buddha III. Through deep study of the teachings in Learning From Buddha and What Is Cultivation, I was awakened. I realized the reasons behind my business failures: I had relied on cleverness and acted out of selfish interest, even using unscrupulous means to gain profits.

With the guidance of the H.H. Dorje Chang Buddha III’s teachings, my husband and I re-evaluated the meaning of doing business: first, to benefit ourselves by earning an honest living; second, to benefit others by helping people and giving back to society. These two goals are interconnected and equally important.

After studying the market, we turned to buying and selling second-hand cars. Initially, due to a lack of funds, we had to partner with others. However, our business partner believed in making profit from accident-damaged cars, thinking that as long as they looked repaired, customers wouldn’t know. He even said, “There are so many people in China. You can keep tricking them endlessly.”

Having learned the law of cause and effect from H.H. Dorje Chang Buddha III, we firmly rejected this profit-above-all mindset. As the saying goes, “Those with different principles should not walk the same path.” So we parted ways.

Business became more difficult after that. In a world driven by greed, staying true to our principles became the biggest challenge—and a test of whether we could truly follow the teachings of a H.H. Dorje Chang Buddha III.

With this change in conviction, our attention to detail also transformed:

Externally, in every transaction—regardless of profit— We take every car sale and purchase seriously, ensuring quality. We understood that every vehicle concerns a family’s safety, and thus, we bore a greater sense of responsibility. We explained all issues carefully, served customers sincerely, and aimed to help them find a truly reliable vehicle.

Internally, we cared about our employees. We never delayed wages. We rewarded those who aligned with our values and worked hard. We treated them like family, acknowledged their efforts, improved their working conditions, and helped them through life difficulties. We hoped they would see our business as their own home and their job as their own career.

After some time, we built a loyal customer base and finally emerged from hardship. I used to think doing business was extremely difficult. Now I feel it’s not hard at all. With dishonest methods, a business cannot last. But with integrity and good reputation, what challenge can’t be overcome?

Reflecting on my journey before and after learning the teachings of H.H. Dorje Chang Buddha III filled me with deep emotion. People often say: “Money isn’t everything, but without money, nothing works.” Everyone loves money, but how can we earn it righteously? The answer lies in diligence and proper livelihood.

As the saying goes, “Great truths are often simple.” Guided by the principle of right livelihood, our business philosophy is rooted in “benefiting both ourselves and others”.

With this five-word principle, we saw not only our own needs but also the needs of others. This allowed us to empathize, serve customers and employees sincerely, and ultimately achieve mutual success.
